Forgive and Forget
Being a catholic irish who visited Belfast in sept 2000 i found the murals both intriguing and replusive i also understand that this problem can't be solved over night but perhaps a good way to heal past wounds is to replace the murals with a more progressive paintings i.e. common ground sports maybe info ads on what to look for while tourist visit the city i would like to visit belfast in my golden years and it would be nice to see a unified city wanting to be recognized in the global community as a beautiful and historic city instead as a seed of hate and violence thank-you for letting me get this off my chest

A sad but interesting look into Irelands recent history

Murals of Northern Ireland
After looking and taking many pictures of the murals of Londonderry (Derry) and of Belfast I have come to the conclusion that the murals are a sad and in some instances shocking.  I feel that they are an intrical part of the N.Ireland culture that the removal of them would be terrable but on the other hand, their presence is an ongoing reminder of the hatred between the religions and political parties.

Hopefully someday all of the hatred will stop so ALL of the childern of N. Ireland will know peace.

Ugly culture in Northern Ireland

Located in Belfast, Northern IrelandMersey Street
You asked if the murals are ugly or part of the culture. I think they are part of an ugly culture in Northern Ireland.
In Holland I'm used to graffitti all over the place, over monuments, war memorials, trains, whatever. No-one dares to put graffitti on these Belfast murals they're held much too sacred. Who wants to look at ugly men with ugly masks / guns / slogans / abbreviations all the time? Or don't you notice them anymore if you live among these murals long enough? I think it's a brave act from some communities to paint them over. They ooze hatred and intimidation.
Yes they are impressive, yes they are a phenomenon, but they glorify a past with petrol bombs, blown out bars, cars and shops, secret and open killings, playing jury-judge-hangman all in one without decent trials. Something to remember, yes, but hardly to be proud of?

I rate this as Terrible
Unless you grew up in belfast and see all the hurt there you dont know anything. A few paintings on walls aint gonna make what went on there right. The troubles in ireland I will never understand, and thats from someone that grew up in the heartland of belfast I am shankill road born and bred.

My wife and I recently had a guided tour of Belfast. We were fascinated with the murals. It was explained that some communities in efforts for peace have chosen to remove their murals. It is understandable but the murals are an interesting visitor attraction to an area seeking visitors. I hope they are kept but ofcourse I do not live there just wanted to let known that they are a visitor attraction. I'm an American with Irish roots. My Bell ancestors were part of the Ulster Plantation movement from Scotland to Northern Ireland and on mother's side the Leahy ancestors hail from Southern Ireland or the Republic. I pray for peace in Northern Ireland.

Part of the struggle on both sides of the wall at Belfast

Located at Belfast, Northern IrelandLoyalist Mural
I rate this as Excellent
I think that the murals in Northern Ireland are an important part of the historical, cultural and political heritage that bestows this part of a beautiful country. Fact, they do carry grave messages of religious dominance on both sides of the wall, however I think that if everyone in N.ireland can open there minds to art and poetry on the walls instead of murdering each other on the streets we will move forward towards a more peaceful Ireland...

I visited Belfast in 2000, and our tour of the murals was one of the highlights of the trip. While the experience was very emotional, it was also memorable. Seeing the struggles, and the tributes to those who have been killed, really put the turmoil of the city and thecountry into perspective. I highly recommend that anyone who visits Belfast views the murals - you will get a much greater sense of history.
