This is the Peace Line at
Cupar Way, separating the Falls from the Shankill. It was built to
protect the
Citizens of West Belfast from harming each other
. It now symbolises Belfast itself a divided city. Over the years
It has become taller and longer. Most people living in those
areas prefer the wall to remain as there still remains a cultural diference and at times throughout the year
of high tension among the population it still serves to protect. Since tourists started coming to Northern ireland
the peace wall has become a place for tourists to come and write messages of support and good will.
Bombay StreetBombay Street just inside the Falls area and the other side of the peace line at Cupar Way. This street was made famous at the start of the troubles because the residents were forced out. Notice the peace line at the rear of the house.
A Street On The Shankill RoadThis is a typical street on the Shankill. The kerb stones are painted red, white and blue because that's the colours of the British flag. Flags hang from lamp posts and houses during the summer to celebrate the Battle Of The Boyne in 1690. |
